How to Apply
MATERIALS |
Here's a list of what you may need for your The Furniture Paint project:
PREPARE THE SURFACE |
Paint should be applied to clean dry surface, free of dust, grime, and debris. Wash off dirt and grease with soap and allow to dry. Pre-scuff glossy surfaces and sand peeling paint, then remove dust with wet cloth. If necessary, give it a light sanding to create a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to.
PROTECT THE SURROUNDING AREA |
Lay down a drop cloth or old sheets to protect the floor or any nearby surfaces from paint splatters.
SHAKE CAN WELL. Open can and stir well with a stir stick, making sure to include any materials at the bottom on the can. |
COVERAGE |
1 quart treats ~ 100 SQ.FT. Actual coverage varies based on application and surface type.
USE |
The Furniture Paint works on so many surfaces! You can use it on furniture, cabinetry, millwork, walls, ceilings, pre-finished wood surfaces, metal, glass, etc. Check out our project gallery photos for more!
PRIME |
A prime coat may be required on high-tannin woods or when going from very dark colors to very light colors.
First, test an inconspicuous swatch. Use a nylon or polyester brush, or roller to apply one liberal coat of stain in the direction of the wood grain. If you need more workable time, you can lightly mist paint with distilled water in a spray bottle. Do not work out of can. Stir paint occasionally during use. |
RE-COAT |
Re-coat until desired coverage is achieved. Repeat the process of applying thin coats and allowing them to dry completely between coats. Generally, two or three coats are sufficient, but you can add more if desired.
For best results, store and use only when temperature is between 50-90°F. |
SAND (Optional) |
For a distressed or textured look, lightly sand the dried first coat using fine-grit sandpaper. Focus on areas that would typically wear over time, like edges and corners.
DRY TIME |
Allow to dry 1 hour. Allow 2 hours for project re-coat time. Allow longer dry times for cooler climates, damp/humid climates, rough sawn or soft woods.
CLEAN UP |
Easy soap and water clean-up. Remember to clean your brushes and tools with water immediately after use if you're using water-based chalk paint. Close paint can lid securely.
After a minimum of 2 hours you can topcoat your project. If you want to add extra durability and protection to the chalk paint finish, you can apply a The Furniture Wax or The Varnish Topcoat. Follow the product instructions to apply the sealant evenly and allow it to cure as recommended. |
After the final coat or sealant is applied, allow the furniture to cure for 24 hours before light use. Full cure time for heavy use on all coatings products is 30 days. |
PRODUCT STORAGE |
Store product in a cool, dry place, 50-90°F.
PROJECT CARE |
Fine furniture and cabinetry finish care is important. After you finish has cured, the best way to clean is with a rag dampened with water. If your surface requires deeper cleaning we suggest adding a drop of dish detergent or vinegar. Be sure to use coasters, mats and trivets. Wipe spills immediately and only use a water damp microfiber cloth and mild dish soap to clean.
Always avoid using oil-soap or silicone-based daily cleaners or dusting sprays. These products contaminate the existing finish and can prevent the adhesion of future finishes. |
